Streets full of children trick-or-treating can be magical. They can also be dangerous as irresponsible adults leave Halloween parties after having a few too many drinks. This Halloween, protect your children by discussing safe practices, not just for staying out of the street, but for all potential dangers on this festive evening.

To help protect your children while they are out this Halloween:

  • Accompany smaller children to provide supervision. Try to limit the child to adult ratio to 4:1
  • Make sure costumes and trick-or-treat bags have reflective material or tape
  • Do not allow masks or hats to block eyesight
  • Carry a flashlight
  • Stay on the sidewalks
  • Do not use earbuds or other items that limit hearing

It is also a good idea to equip unaccompanied children with cellphones and to cover emergency procedures such as calling 911 if an accident should occur.

Halloween can be tremendous fun. Help ensure you and your family’s evening is safe by taking time to talk to your children about potential dangers and the best ways to avoid them.
