According to a report released by the inspector general of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, one-third of all elderly patients in skilled nursing facilities will come to harm during treatment and aftercare. The report followed a study of 635 randomly selected patients in more than 600 nursing homes which found that this type of nursing home abuse and neglect results in:

  • Lasting damages for 22 percent of patients
  • Death for 1.5 percent of patients

The report looked only at “skilled nursing” facilities that offer rehabilitation for seniors after hospital stays. 90 percent of these facilities are also long-term care nursing home centers.
