Failure To Track Patient Harm

By September 22, 2014February 9th, 2017Medical Errors

A recent study suggests as many as 440,000 deaths occur in hospitals each year as a result of medical error, but patient advocates warn that our healthcare industry has done next to nothing to track these problems. Sadly, doing nothing prevents appropriate action that could reduce the risk of these hospital errors.

At a July hearing before the Senate Subcommittee on Primary Health and Aging, a group of scientists, safety experts, and medical professors urged stricter regulations on tracking patient harm. This group seeks, in part, to require the Center for Disease Control and Prevention to begin tracking injury caused by medication errors and other forms of medical malpractice occurring in hospitals. The Senate Subcommittee has yet to take action on these recommendations.
